Collection of Weaving and Embroidery

The Collection of Weaving and Embroidery includes textile fragments, primarily parts of clothing with embroidered or woven ornaments (parts of women's caps, sewn or cut parts of men's and women's shirts, aprons, skirts, scarves, etc.) as well as weaving or embroidery examples from valuable private collections from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including samples of fabric and embroidery from the collections of Srećko Lay, Ferdo Hefele, Milko Cepelić and teacher Milka Štanfelj. The largest number of objects is part of the initial holdings, which are also the oldest ones, originating primarily from the Central and Eastern Croatia. The number and characteristics of the inventoried objects (7,392) correspond to the concept of collecting samples of textile handicraft, and the concept of folk art as a potential model for new production and renewal of artistic crafts in the specific social, political and cultural events that led to the foundation of the Ethnographic Museum. In 2019, the collection was divided into two parts with two Curators: The Collection of Weaving and Embroidery Samples from the Initial Holdings (Tea Rittig Šiško) and Ethnographica (Tanja Kocković Zaborski).
